About Brandon Adams

Brandon Alonzo Adams was born on December 22, 1997, in Nashville, Tennessee. Born to lead, the aspiring CEO epitomized the term student-athlete as an honors student and three-sport-athlete at Brentwood Academy—a prestigious private school located outside of Nashville.

Upon being recruited to play college football with scores of Division I scholarship offers, the three-star prospect, rated as the top defensive tackle in the state of Tennessee, ultimately chose the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Making an immediate impact, Brandon was one of six true freshmen who earned playing time during the 2016 season. This was followed by a stellar sophomore campaign where he played as a reserve defensive tackle. As a junior, Brandon had a coming-out party, registering a career-high season total with 24 tackles, five tackles for loss, and two forced fumbles in 13 games as a starter. The breakout campaign had him on the radar as a potential early-round NFL draft pick.

A true leader, teammate, big brother, and friend, many would argue Brandon’s impact off-the-field was as strong as his performance on the field. A Business Administration major, who also enjoyed singing, dancing, and volunteering with service groups, Brandon spent countless hours giving back to his community during his time at Brentwood and Georgia Tech. In 2019, Brandon and four other college-educated young men bound together and were initiated into the Delta Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc.

While serving as a volunteer speaker and mentor to attendees at the Metro Atlanta Football Recruiting Summit, Christopher Martin, a fellow teammate and line brother of Brandon, told Brandon about the event and how together they could support the program by mentoring college-bound high school seniors on best practices and tools to be successful on the collegiate level. Enthused, the new initiates from the Delta Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi were dedicated to making the Metro Atlanta Recruiting Summit a life project.

“He was driven to make an impact in this world more off the field than on the field. He was NFL-bound. However, with all of those accolades what made my line brother special was how selfless and humble he was. Since giving back to the community was a core strength of Brandon’s, we are honored to keep his name alive through the Brandon Adams Football Recruiting Summit,” said Brother Chris Martin.

Unfortunately, in March of 2019, Brandon’s life was tragically cut short. Although Brandon Adams has transitioned, the members of Delta Kappa Chapter and Phi Kappa Kappa Chapter of Omega Psi Phi honored him by renaming the Metro Atlanta Recruiting Summit to the Brandon Adams Football Recruiting Summit.

History of the Football Recruiting Summit

After a successful high school coaching career lasting more than 20 years, coach Alonzo Upshur was asked to use his resources to assist student-athletes who were talented but overlooked or late bloomers in finding scholarship opportunities through athletics. Starting with track and field, Coach Upshur, a former standout wide receiver at Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina, devised a plan to help undiscovered students get discovered.

Coaching in communities that were underserved, high poverty and high crime, coach Upshur understood the transformative power of education through sports. He saw it as a way to not only meet the overwhelming need but also pave the way for young men of color to obtain college degrees, and ultimately become productive men in society as fathers and husbands.

In 2008, the Omega Football Recruiting Summit was established for high school football players who wanted to play college football and attend college. Serving students from Atlanta Public Schools, Clayton County, DeKalb County, and Fulton County, the program started with just 35 student-athletes and members of Omega Psi Phi, who were also former football players, serving as representatives to talk to students about the academic options.

Morehouse College was the first school to sign two attendees from the program in the same year – Jerry Carter and Thomas – both former student-athletes who Upshur coached. Their success stories serve as a testament to the effectiveness of Coach Upshur’s program.

The program would continue to grow in the next few years, sparking an uptick of interest due to the success of program attendees on the collegiate level. This growth and success led to the evolution of the program into the Metro Atlanta Football Recruiting Summit by 2012. The expanded program now included representation from Head Football Coaches, Coordinators, or Assistant Coaches from Division II, Division III, NAIA, Junior Colleges and Prep Schools staff attending the program from across the country, demonstrating the widespread recognition and impact of Coach Upshur’s efforts.

As 87% of attendees are First-Generation College Students and 94% attended Title I High Schools, the program’s impact has been monumental. Former players have contributed as starters, lettermen, conference champions, and college graduates, showcasing the program’s success and making us all proud of their achievements.

About the Football Recruiting Summit

According to statistics from the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), less than 10 percent of the 1.5 million football-playing high school seniors receive opportunities to play football on the collegiate level. Georgia, being one of the more talent-rich high school football states, sees more than 1,500 football-playing seniors left without collegiate scholarship offers annually due to a lack of exposure and/or resources. This makes the opportunity to participate in the Brandon Adams Football Recruiting Summit an exclusive and privileged one.

Serving as a bridge between aspiring student-athletes and collegiate programs, the Brandon Adams Football Recruiting Summit addresses a critical gap in the recruitment process by creating a platform for high school football players who may have otherwise gone unnoticed. This event not only highlights the untapped potential of student-athletes from metro Atlanta and the surrounding areas but also fosters a sense of community, providing a direct line of communication between these players and college coaches. By facilitating face-to-face interactions and personalized showcases, the summit enables coaches to assess talent beyond traditional metrics, allowing deserving athletes to demonstrate their skills, work ethic, and readiness to compete at the collegiate level. This exposure is crucial for athletes who, despite their abilities, might not have the means or resources to attend multiple college camps or travel for recruitment purposes.

Moreover, the summit supports the broader goal of increasing diversity and equity in college athletics. Many student-athletes from underserved communities face barriers that hinder their access to recruitment opportunities. The Brandon Adams Football Recruiting Summit mitigates these barriers by offering a centralized, cost-effective venue for student-athletes to showcase their talents to a wide range of college programs. By providing this platform, the summit helps level the playing field, ensuring that more students, regardless of their socio-economic background, have the chance to pursue their dreams of playing collegiate football while also earning an education that will benefit them long after their athletic careers have ended. This journey of personal growth and achievement is what inspires us at the Brandon Adams Football Recruiting Summit.
